Tips For A Successful Engagement Session

“We are super awkward!”

“We’ve never had professional photos taken!”

“I don’t know what to do with my hands.”

Sound familiar?

Getting your picture taken can be a nerve-wracking experience, even if it’s just on an iPhone with your friend. You want to make sure you look good. I get it! So your engagement photos can really be overwhelming if you let yourself overthink it. So, I wanted to take the time today to share some of my top tips for preparing for your session and help put some of your thoughts at ease!

The Basics

  • Timing. Sunset shoots in the mountains are beautiful, but time sensitive. Especially if we’re outside the summer months. If you arrive late to your shoot we have less time together!

  • Weather. The weather is unpredictable at the best of times. During summertime consider bringing an umbrella for random storms. In the cooler months make sure you layer up for moving between locations.

  • Changing Clothes. Again, mountain shoots are beautiful, but sometimes there’s no restroom to change in. Be prepared for changing in your car. (Or utilize my pop up tent I always bring with me!)

  • Clothing. Piggybacking off my last tip, most of my couples like to bring one casual outfit and one dressy outfit. If you want to read more in depth tips about clothing for your shoot, click here! (link to Engagement Session Style post)

  • Lip color and hair. You’ll more than likely need to reapply your lip color after a few kisses and outfit change. Also, if your hair struggles in the humidity, a hairbrush and some hairspray work wonders for a quick fix!

  • Shoes. I’m all for awesome footwear, but it’s not always practical for walking to location. Make sure to bring some comfy shoes for between locations.

Extra Tips

  • Ring Cleaning. I love grabbing some detail shots of the rings! The cleaner the ring, the better the photos. It’s a simple tip that makes a big difference.

  • Pockets. Empty your pockets! This is a good reminder for everyone, but especially the guys. We don’t want any keys or phones showing through in your pictures.

  • Deep breaths. This is an exciting time for you! And I’m here to help you along every step of the way. There’s no need to be anxious. Make a date out of it and go out to dinner after your shoot to celebrate!

Hopefully you’re feeling a little more relaxed now, reading these tips and knowing there’s ways to prepare yourself beforehand. Remember, this is a celebration of your love! It shouldn’t feel stressful or overwhelming.

You got this.
